Title of the talk: Le processus socio-langagier d’appropriation du français par les adultes migrants.

Abstract: Dès lors que les migrants s’installent en France, ils entament un processus d’appropriation du français par le fait qu’ils sont en contacts avec la langue majoritaire. Ce processus est cependant très différent selon les parcours des personnes dans la société française et il est étroitement lié à la fréquence et la nature de leurs rapports socio-langagiers avec les francophones. Pour mieux comprendre le processus d’appropriation du français, il s’agit donc de repérer et d’analyser les situations socio-langagières dans lesquelles ils sont engagés et de comprendre en quoi elles sont potentiellement des (re)sources d’apprentissage.

Prof Bonny Norton (FRSC), University of British Columbia, Canada

Title of the talk: Identity and Digital Storytelling: Towards Multilingual Futures for Migrant Language Learners

Abstract : As language learners navigate changing times, they need to negotiate new identities, investments, and imagined futures (Norton, 2013). Working with Ron Darvin, I have responded to new linguistic landscapes by developing an expanded model that integrates identity, investment, capital, and ideology in a comprehensive framework (Darvin & Norton, 2015, 2023). Drawing on my recent research on identity and digital storytelling in both wealthy and poorly resourced communities worldwide (Norton, Stranger-Johannessen, & Doherty, 2020), I will discuss how freely available digital stories in multiple languages can harness the linguistic capital of migrant language learners in homes, schools, and communities, creating greater possibilities for enhanced identities in the future. My presentation will include a demonstration of the Global Storybooks project in which free digital stories are available in multiple languages spoken in France and worldwide.
